Marie Antoinette: “Let them eat cake!”

(Feb. 27, 2019)

Today, San Diego County Supervisors, in a move reminiscent of Marie Antoinette’s “let them eat cake”, ignored the pleas of 24 constituents and scores of others who wrote in, voting to approve a weak wireless ordinance for the unincorporated areas of the County, designed to allow the wireless industry virtually free reign to install what informed scientists and physicians insist are dangerous 5G “small cells” throughout residential and commercial zones. The only people who spoke in favor were two employees of Verizon, on behalf of the company. Constituents were very concerned about health impacts from small cells to be placed near homes and schools, and a number also detailed how property values would drop. Some said they’d move if “small cells” were deployed.  The Supervisors could have sent this wireless ordinance draft back for revision, but unlike other municipalities in the same position, approved it, implying that they had to act today, and said in the next 180 days they might look at ways to improve it. “Let them eat cake!”  – let the county residents be continuously exposed to harmful radiation from “small cells” at close range, harming children, pregnant women, and elderly; undermining health, education, property values, and our economy, according to experts. Not acceptable! Many at the meeting felt this was an example of a County Board of Supervisors unresponsive to the needs and requests of its residents. Many other municipalities have listened to the concerns of their constituents and crafted more protective ordinances, from the start.
